Our Friday After School Sewing Club takes an Embroidery turn this month!
Over the course of four classes, students will get to work on two embroidered projects. For the first, we’ll cover the basics of how to thread a needle and learn two stitches—running stitch and split stitch.
Using water-soluble pens on fabric in a wooden hoop, each student will create and use their own drawing as an embroidery pattern for a 4 inch wall hanging. We’ll also cover how to finish an embroidery hoop so that it can be used to proudly display your work when it’s done!
In the second project, the students will move on to a bigger canvas and learn two more stitches—back stitch and cross stitch. Each student will get to embellish a JP Knit & Stitch tote bag with their own name and design (again, using water soluble pens). they can choose to work on just one or both sides and the bag also doubles as a handy way to transport their work to and from class!
Materials:
JP Knit & Stitch tote bag (included in the price of the class!)
Several shades of cotton floss to choose from that everyone can share
1 4 inch embroidery hoop
Plain linen embroidery cloth (anything you've got will do just fine)
Embroidery needles
Child-safe scissors or normal ones for older students
Water-soluble pens (one each)
Fabric glue (one for whole class to be used at very end to finish wall hanging so one hoop can be used for both projects)

You will learn how to stretch your fabric in an embroidery hoop, two different ways to thread your needle with cotton floss, the difference between tails vs. knots, as well as straight stitch, back stitch, split stitch, stem stitch, and French knots.
You will leave the class with your very own embroidered wall hanging as the wooden hoop doubles as a handy frame. Each student will embellish a fabric of their choice. This is a very introductory course that will cover method as much as inspiration and resources: at the end of class, you’ll receive a handout with a listing of some of the best sewing resources for everything from quilting to garment stitching, and from blogs to books.
Come to class with your pre-washed fabric (1 1/4 yards of a single fabric, or 3/4 yards each of two contrasting fabrics), matching thread, and a pillow form. We will provide the sewing machines, but if you have one with which you would like to get acquainted, please bring it in!

THE FINE PRINT: Sewing classes are limited to six students. Once you have signed up and paid for a class within a week of the start date you will receive an confirmation email with a materials list for the first class (if the materials list is not already posted in the class description). We will keep a waitlist for each class and let you know if anyone drops out. If you have to drop out before a class starts, a full refund is only available if we can fill the spot. Because our class sizes are so limited, if we cannot fill the spot, then we cannot offer a refund.  We do not offer a refund if you have to drop out of a class once it has already started. We do not offer make up classes if you have to miss a class. We reserve the right to cancel a class if enrollment drops below three students. You would then receive a spot in a future class or a full refund. If you are signed up for a class you receive a 10% discount on materials.
