Me Made May Interview

The lovely and talented Janice won the JP Knit & Stitch Me Made May Instagram contest. Me Made May is a celebration of all things handmade. Crafty folks from around the world post photos of their handmade goodness throughout the month of May. We sat down with Janice to chat about her crafty life. Here are the highlights:

How did you learn to craft? I come from a long line of crafters. My mom made all my own clothes and taught me how to sew. My Grandmother sewed, crocheted, and did needlepoint. I got back into sewing and knitting when your shop opened [ed. note: that makes us happy :-)!] . My youngest daughter Ada also inspired me to sew and knit again.

What’s your crafting space like? We have lived for 8 years in our current small condo – which we love – but it did not have a dedicated crafting space. As a Christmas present my amazing husband created a sewing nook for me in our bedroom. [See photos below.] It is wonderful to be able to have sewing projects out and sit down and sew when I have the time.

As a busy working mom of three, how/when do you carve out crafting time? I knit in meetings a lot! I always have at least two projects with me, including an easy one that I can knit on without looking. [ed.note: !!!] For sewing I use weekend time. We often have a family outing in the morning and then quiet time in the afternoon and I will either cook or sew during that time.

What are your hopes and dreams around your crafting? My husband and I used to be big planners. Now we have become much more focused on the journey than the destination. I would like to be able to spend more time quilting, which requires more dedicated time than I have right now. I would like to learn to weave. I also hope to get to a point where I enjoy crafting with the kids more. [ed. note: we can totally relate to this!] It’s all about letting go of perfection – it’s very important with kids to focus on process not product.
